On Sunday the 14th of May, the Paisley West Community Sport Hub hosted a free Come and Try Day in County Square, Paisley with over 300 local children coming down on the day to try some new sports in the sunshine. In what was the first event of its kind in Renfrewshire, Football, Netball, Cricket and Tennis were all available on the day to come and try with clubs, including St Peters Football & Netball Club, Langcraigs FC and Ferguslie Cricket Club, offering a taste of what their club can offer the community!
Participants got to try their hand at a shooting competition with Langcraigs FC, Precision passing with St Peters Football Club, batting and bowling with Ferguslie Cricket Club, a shooting challenge with St Peters Netball Club with the help of our Young Hub Leaders and pick up and play tennis was also on offer led by another of our Young Hub Leaders.
The event was a fantastic success with everyone involved enjoying the weather and the chance to try some new sports. Many participants on the day were trying sports like cricket for the first time and left the day with cricket as their favourite sport from the day. Plenty of prizes were available to be won on the day and with a grand prize of a £100 Decathlon voucher potentially available for anyone who took part in every sport, the children got stuck in and tried their best at every station. The clubs who took part were able to promote themselves, their teams and all the good work they do whilst participants were able to learn more about the clubs and find out what clubs are available in the area for themselves or their children.
Following recent surveys with local schools, parents, teachers and organisations, the need for participating in sport in an easily accessible venue was identified and this day was part of the Paisley West Community Sport Hub's plan to make sport a way of life for everyone.
