Black History Month: Matt Hickman (Brownbear)

Matt Hickman is the lead singer/songwriter of four piece indie-rock outfit Brownbear. The group released their debut single 'Dead or Alive' in May 2014 which subsequently gained them national radio exposure and high profile gigs which included supporting The Libertines at their comeback show at the iconic Barrowland’s Balllroom in Glasgow. Brownbear then went on to join The Libertines again at their BST Summertime show at Hyde Park before playing at a number of festivals including T in The Park & Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival. An acoustic version of 'Dead or Alive' recorded in the BBC Treehouse became the most viewed clip online for T in the Park 2014 ahead of the likes of Arctic Monkeys & Biffy Clyro.

 

Black History Month: Joshua Idehen

Joshua Idehen is a poet, teacher and musician. A British born Nigerian, his poetry has been published alongside Linton Kwesi Johnson and Anthony Joseph and he has performed at festivals and respected venues across the UK and Europe. He collaborated with Mercury nominated artists The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet. HE collaborated with dance pop band Benin City on “Last Night”, released in June 2018 by Moshi Moshi Music. He is working on his debut collection and several musical projects.

Black History Month: Mara Menzies - Part 2

Mara is an award winning performance storyteller whose dynamic, colourful style brings this ancient artform to life. She has been invited to share stories in 27 countries with her latest production, ‘Blood and Gold’ exploring the legacy of colonialism and slavery through myth, legend and fantasy. It premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019 as part of the Made in Scotland showcase and was one of 5 shows nominated for the Filipa Braganca award for best emerging solo female performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, receiving rave reviews from top theatre critics. Mara draws on her rich cultural heritage to create stories that explore our deepest fears, joys, loves, jealousies, passions and mysteries. She finds the truths about humanity in stories. She creates bespoke stories informing, inspiring and entertaining.
