Renfrewshire Primary Athletics Championships 2018

Renfrewshire Primary Athletics Championships 2018

On Wednesday 2nd May we hosted our first ever primary schools team athletics championships at ON-X Linwood. A total of 18 schools entered with 360 pupils competing on the day, across 10 different events. The day combined some traditional events with some more innovative and exciting events like the 2X200m, Elimination race and Medley relays.

Inspired by last years Nitro Athletics event in Australia where Usain Bolt competed with a team, we looked at establishing a similar event that we could run with primary schools in Renfrewshire. After a few months of planning and pulling things together we were finally ready to put our planning into practice!

With the focus on school V school competition rather than individual performances, we awarded points for pupils competing in each event which went to their schools final total. A great day was had by all schools, a really good atmosphere and with a bit of luck with the weather made for great racing!

The pupils were inspired by visits from Bonnie the Seal (this years Glasgow 2018 European championships mascot) and Jemma Reekie, European U20 1500m champion!
