Renfrewshire Regional Volleyball Development Squad

Renfrewshire Regional Volleyball Development Squad

Over the last few years the Scottish Volleyball Association and Renfrewshire Leisure have forged a really strong partnership with the development of local volleyball at its heart. As Part to the local strategy, the aim has been to create a competitive club and look to build for the future. With this in mind the group set out to establish a new junior participation centre and use the success of the Renfrewshire Secondary Schools mini league to generate interest.

With the help of the local authority we were able to establish the Renfrewshire Regional Development centre in Linwood High school. The aim for this group was to recruit train and develop junior players on a National team pathway and to entre a team into the SVA U18 super cup. The session attracted 20 local players 13yrs 18yrs old with a mix of boys and girls. These sessions were 2.5hrs long and were developed to include a comprehensive physical conditioning program as well as a National team skill development sessions.

Our first Goal was to identify players to attend to the first open national team trial. This saw 9 players from the squad invited to spend 3 days with the National team at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility for the annual Christmas camp. Over the 3 days the Regional squad players trained side by side with the full national team squad and worked with Thomas Dowens, senior National team coach.

Once the group came back in the New Year we had linked with Su Ragazzi VC to help the group take a team to the U18 super cup in Dundee. This was the competitive goal for the group from the outset and would be a massive test for the group. At this tournament the team would play 6v6 for the first time and would be competing with the very best junior teams in Scotland. The boy’s team faced this strong level of competition and performed way beyond the coaches’ expectations. Each game saw the group make massive performance strides and game by game they became more confident. As a result the coaches of the other teams were delighted with new competition and commented that this was extremely positive for the region.

The next phase of this development will see the squad players go forward for trails for the Scottish Volleyball Association Junior national team development program the Flying Scots. In previous year the squad saw the inclusion of 3 players. This year the coaching staff are hopeful of getting even more players into this program.
