And the winners of the Renfrewshire Sports Awards 2017 are..

 

 

COMMUNITY COACH OF THE YEAR

 

 ARTHUR SMITH

Arthur has been a key figure within Kilbarchan AAC for the last 30+ years. Over a long period of time he has coached endurance runners that have come through the ranks and gone on to win high profile events locally and nationally.

 

 

 

DEVELOPMENT COACH OF THE YEAR

 SUSAN WRIGHT

Susan is head coach of Clyde Judo Club, a club she set up 9 years ago. She travels across the UK and Europe with her players accompanying them to all level of tournaments. Susan has spent over 30 years involved in judo, and her dedication to the sport and players is well known in the judo community.

 

 

 

DISABILITY SPORTS COACH OF THE YEAR

 

RACHEL KILLENS

As a disability athlete herself, Rachel currently volunteers with the Paisley Piranhas. She provides one to one coaching with swimmers who need additional support, whist still swimming with the club herself. Rachel is also involved with other local clubs, delivering various sports to 40+ participants with additional support needs.

 

 

 

YOUNG COACH OF THE YEAR

CLAIRE SCOUGALL

Claire coaches across Renfrewshire, with a main focus on the Gleniffer area in Paisley. She spends a lot of her time coaching the Paisley Juniors Netball Club, where her teams have been very successful and reached finals of major national competitions. Over the past 4 years, Claire has never missed a session.

  

 

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

 

JOANNE MCDOWALL

Joanne has contributed a vast amount of time to the development of sport within Barsail Primary School, despite her full time role being within Law. She runs the weekly P4-7 after school running club, and took a holiday from her work to accompany the children to a cross country event. Joanne has undertaken various sponsored events in order to raise money for the school.

 

 

 

YOUNG VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

 

LUSIA STEELE

 Lusia voluntarily delivers school health days, cycling training in Barsail, and is part of the school sports committee. Lusia is in the Great Britain Cycling squad, and gives up countless hours each week to her club Johnstone Jets as a volunteer at weekly training and full day events. She also takes the time to provide presentations to local primary pupils on commitment, dedication and her sport.

 

 

 

EVENT VOLUNTEER OF 2017

 

JOHN RODGER

 John has been heavily involved with Kilbarchan AAC for over 20 years. Over the last 10, John has been a vital person in the development of Renfrewshire schools athletics events including cross country, road race and field events. He is also a key person within the Paisley 10k organisational team, and his experience and knowledge is crucial to the smooth and successful running of the event.

 

 

 

TECHNICAL OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR

 

JACK THOMSON

Jack has been refereeing at the BasketballPaisley Friday Night Superleague, West Regional Development League’s and various Scottish league games for the past 3 years. He started refereeing at the age of 14, and he has made a positive impact by promoting the officiating opportunity to other club members.

 

 

 

DEDICATION TO SPORT AWARD

 ARTHUR SMITH

 Arthur has been a member of Kilbarchan AAC for over 50 years. Over the last 30 years that he has been in a coaching role at the club, Arthur has worked with in excess of 150 young athletes. Most recently, he has coached current Scottish Internationalist Laura Stark and GB Internationalist Jemma Reekie.
